Who we are, what we're doing, and why.
Who we are
Banksia Systems was started by a small group of engineers and builders who kept running into the same problem: getting started with serious robotics is harder than it needs to be. The tools are expensive, the platforms are closed, and the barrier to doing anything meaningful is too high. We decided to do something about it.
We are a team with backgrounds spanning mechatronic engineering, software development, and business. We are early stage and honest about it. The platform is under active development, and the ecosystem is being shaped. If you are reading this, you are among the first people to find it.
What we're doing and why
We believe that professional-grade robotics should be built on an open foundation. By providing a free core supported by commercial services, we ensure the platform remains both accessible to the community and maintained to a rigorous, industrial standard.
Our approach balances community growth with commercial stability. This structure allows us to reinvest in the open-core ecosystem, ensuring that the platform stays high-quality and reliable for the engineers and companies who depend on it.
By establishing this foundation in Australia, we are directly addressing the needs of a local industry that has been underserved. We are here to lower the barriers to entry, making it possible for students and professionals alike to do serious, impactful robotics work right here at home.
Where we're headed
Right now we are building the core platform, establishing university partnerships, and having early conversations with industry partners. The focus is on getting the foundations right before scaling anything.
Near-term: a public release of the core platform with documentation and working examples, followed by the first Banksia hackathon. After that, closer integration with universities that want to teach robotics on something real.
We are not trying to look more finished than we are. If you want to be involved before the obvious moment, we would like to hear from you.
